Police in Warri, Delta State, have detained a woman known only as Mama Edith for reportedly burning her 8-year-old housekeeper with a hot knife.
Comrade Israel Joe, an activist who confirmed the occurrence, stated that the woman was detained on Friday, May 19, 2023 and would be charged in court next Monday.
Misan, the girl, was brought from her village a year ago after the suspect promised to send her to school.
The woman, according to Mr. Joe, subjected the girl to various forms of torture, including torturing her with a hot knife.
In a Facebook post, the activist praised the DPO of B Division, Warri, Mr. Bola Alabi, for quickly apprehending the suspect despite efforts by certain comrades to free him.
“Dear Mr. Bola Alabi, DPO B Division, Warri. “Re: Guardian who nearly burned an 8-year-old housekeeper to death with a hot knife,” he wrote.
I’d like to thank you in particular for staying firm despite the pressure, since “mama Edith” was detained earlier today. My team has remained on the sidelines to closely monitor the investigations and how things are handled.
Misan was taken from the hamlet around a year ago after the suspect assured Misan’s father that she would send her to school because Misan had lost her mother.
In the lives of this little 8-year-old girl, that one year has been a nightmare. Her guardian has constantly used a hot knife against her and all over her body. The neighbors had shouted out multiple times, but help does not appear to have arrived until this one, which almost killed the small girl.
Please, sir, as you have been and as you have promised the nation and my humble self this evening, charge this woman in court on Monday. Make it a reality not only with us, but also with posterity, which will come to reward you eventually.
Some so-called comrades have been pleading for the woman’s release, but I believe that justice is more important than familiarity, sir.
