Hon. Shina Abiola Peller, the Accord candidate for Oyo North Senatorial District, has revealed why the party joined forces with Governor Seyi Makinde of the Peoples Democratic Party. (PDP).
Peller made the revelation while speaking at a party stakeholders meeting in Ibadan, the state capital, on Saturday.
The lawmaker, who currently represents Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Iwajowa/Kajola Federal Constituency, explained that he and other Accord chieftains in the state decided to form the coalition following the presidential and National Assembly elections due to the party’s failure to win seats in the Senate or House of Representatives.
He went on to say that he told the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Adebayo Adelabu, that there was no way the party (Accord) could win the gubernatorial election after failing to win Senate or House of Representatives seats.
He insisted that this is what prompted him and other party leaders to form a coalition with Makinde of the PDP.
Peller also stated that the coalition was formed following a meeting with Oke Ogun traditional rulers.
“I told our gubernatorial candidate, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, that we have no chance of winning the election.” I cannot bring my constituents to this type of election. Can we still hold an election in which we do not have a Senator or a House of Representatives seat and the gubernatorial candidate lost in his polling unit?
“I told Adelabu to keep the party members’ interests in mind. We thank God for many blessings. We thank God that we are still alive today.
“The purpose of this meeting is to chart a course of action.” Whatever we say here should be passed on to wards and local governments. People do not vote for the party again, but for themselves.
“A governor rules over everyone.” We need to pool our resources. We’ve come to evaluate our performance. Why we backed Makinde. We formed a coalition and campaigned for Governor Seyi Makinde’s re-election. We have been clamoring for a university in Oke Ogun for the past 70 years, and he has given us a LAUTECH campus in Iseyin.
“The roads from Ibadan to Iseyin, Ogbomoso to Iseyin, and Oyo to Iseyin are all for the development of Oke Ogun.” The traditional rulers convened all political parties to discuss what we can do to benefit the state as a whole following the presidential and national assembly elections.
“We thank God that we were able to assist him. He is a decent person. We will not be sorry. He has promised an inclusive government. That is why we must gather and talk to ourselves. What has occurred has occurred. Accept everyone instead of fighting them. Let our discussions continue.”
