US actor, Armie Hammer escapes criminal charges in LA r*pe case after two-year investigation

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced in a statement that it will not charge Armie Hammer after a two-year inquiry into sexual assault claims brought against the troubled actor in 2021.

“We assign our most experienced prosecutors to review sexual assault cases because they are often difficult to prove.” In this case, prosecutors conducted a comprehensive investigation but found that there is insufficient evidence to indict Mr. Hammer at this time. “As prosecutors, we have an ethical responsibility to only charge cases that we can prove beyond a reasonable doubt,” Tiffiny Blacknell, DA George Gascon’s Director of Communications, said in a statement.

Because the DA’s office was unable to establish that a non-consensual, forced sexual encounter happened, Blacknell stated that the case against the Call Me By Your Name star could not be proven.

“We understand how difficult it is for women to report sexual assault. Even if a prosecution cannot be pursued, our victim service professionals will be available to those who request our victim support services,” the statement stated. “Due to the complexity of the relationship and our inability to establish a non-consensual, forcible sexual encounter, we are unable to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.”

In May 2021, Los Angeles police opened an investigation into Hammer after a woman who only identified herself as Effie came forward with public allegations that she was victimised by The Social Network actor in April 2017.

Effie made multiple charges of sexual assault and abuse in a public release at the time.

“He abused me mentally, emotionally, and se*ually,” she alleged in her statement. “I was afraid he was going to kill me.”

After a two-year inquiry, US actor Armie Hammer was cleared of criminal charges in the LA r*pe case.
“From day one, Mr. Hammer has maintained that all of his interactions with [Effie] — and every other sexual partner of his for that matter — have been completely consensual, discussed and agreed upon in advance, and mutually participatory,” Hammer’s attorney told ET in a statement at the time. [Effie’s] publicity-seeking and ill-advised legal bid will only make it more difficult for genuine victims of sexual violence to obtain the justice they deserve.”

Following the announcement on Wednesday, Hammer — who has two children with ex-wife Elizabeth Chambers, Grace, 8, and Ford Douglas Armand, 6 — rushed to Instagram to express his gratitude to the DA’s office for conducting a comprehensive investigation. Now that his name has been cleared, the 36-year-old actor said he intends to begin the “long” and “difficult” process of putting his life back together.

After a two-year inquiry, US actor Armie Hammer was cleared of criminal charges in the LA r*pe case.

“I am very grateful to the District Attorney for conducting a thorough investigation and coming to the conclusion that I have stood by this entire time, that no crime was committed,” Hammer wrote, the first time he’s spoken out about the allegations since February.

“I am excited to begin what will be a long and difficult process of putting my life back together now that my name has been cleared.”

“I would like to say a very special thank you to all of the people who have helped me get through this time,” he wrote in the post. “Onwards and up.”

The Los Angeles Police Department opened an inquiry into Hammer in March 2021 after a woman called Effie Angelova said she was victimised by Hammer in April 2017.

Angelova, 24, previously came out about her claimed se*ual relationship with the Social Network star during a March 2021 news appearance, alleging the pair were intimate on and off from 2016 to 2020 after meeting over Facebook.

Angelova, who met Hammer when she was 20 years old, claims that their relationship “progressed rapidly” and that “emotions from both sides became really intense.”

“In retrospect, it is clear to me that he was using manipulation tactics to exert control over me until I began to lose myself.” [He] would frequently put my loyalty to him to the test, crossing my limits as he got more violent and used me intellectually, emotionally, and sexually.”

Angelova said that the Death of a Salesman star “abused me mentally, emotionally, and sexually,” citing an alleged event in Los Angeles in 2017 in which “Armie Hammer violently raped me for over four hours.”

She reportedly claimed that he “committed other acts of violence against me, to which I did not consent,” such as slamming her head against the wall and striking her feet with a crop.

“During those four hours, I tried to get away,” she said. “I discovered he was planning to murder me. He then walked away, unconcerned about my well-being.”

Hammer, for his part, refuted the charges, saying in a long statement to Us Weekly that Angelova’s “own correspondence with Mr. Hammer undermines and refutes her outrageous allegations.”

“As recently as July 18, 2020, Ms. Angelova sent Mr. Hammer detailed texts detailing what she wanted him to do to her. “Mr. Hammer responded by making it clear that he did not want to maintain that type of relationship with her,” Us learned via his attorney. “It was never Mr. Hammer’s intention to embarrass or expose Ms. Angelova’s fetishes or kinky sexual desires, but she has now escalated this matter to another level by hiring a civil lawyer to host a public press conference.”

“With the truth on his side, Mr. Hammer welcomes the opportunity to set the record straight,” the statement concluded. Mr. Hammer has maintained from the beginning that all of his relations with Ms. Angelova — and every other sexual partner he has had — have been totally consensual, discussed and agreed upon in advance, and mutually participating. Ms. Angelova’s publicity-seeking and ill-advised legal bid will only make it more difficult for genuine victims of sexual violence to receive the justice they deserve.”
