SZA voted Billboard 2023 Woman of the Year

The Billboard Women in Music Awards has named it Woman of the year. SZA will be honoured as Woman of the Year at the Billboard Women in Music Awards in March.

“Since she broke onto the scene in 2017, SZA has defied genres and constantly created honest, emotional songs which have put her music on the Billboard charts,” said Hanna Karp, Billboard’s editorial director.

“The release of her newest album, ‘SOS’ has confirmed her as a unique force in modern R&B, and rocketed her into superstardom. We can’t wait to celebrate her as Women of the Year.”

Born in Missouri, SZA started her music career in 2011 concentrating on the R&B genre. Just a few years into her career, SZA co-wrote ‘Feeling Myself’ with Beyoncé and Nicki Minaj in 2014 and was featured in ‘Consideration’ by Rihanna in 2016.

SZA launched her second album ‘SOS’ on Dec 9 where it promptly seized the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200. ‘SOS’ earned nearly 400 million streams in the U.S. alone in its first week, which enabled it to become the second-largest streaming week for a female artist and the third-largest of 2022 among all albums.

She has now become a well-respected singer and composer garnering multiple awards including a Grammy, two MTV Video Music Awards, an American Music Award, two BET Awards and one Billboard Music Award.

After dominating 2022 with viral TikTok singles, her first Grammy victory and, of course, her seven-week #Billboard200 chart-topping album ‘SOS,’ @SZA has been awarded Billboard‘s 2023 Woman of the Year.

SZA has also gotten other nominations including 13 other Grammy nominations, an Academy Award and Golden Globe.

“I was never really motivated to become a musician, but I was inspired to produce art,” SZA remarked in an interview. “I have a little bit of a voice and it’s evolved a lot, but I was never really trying to sing — it just sort of came into place.”

Previous Woman of the Year winners includes Olivia Rodrigo (2022), Cardi B (2020), Billie Eilish (2019), Ariana Grande (2018), Selena Gomez (2017), Madonna (2016), Lady Gaga (2015) and Taylor Swift (2014). (2014).

The Billboard Women in Music Awards is a unique yearly event intended to recognize women in the music business. Its most coveted honour is Woman of the Year.

According to Billboard magazine, the award event honours “women in the music industry who have made substantial contributions to the business and who, through their work and sustained success, encourage generations of women to take on increased responsibilities within the field.”

This year, the Billboard Women in Music Awards will broadcast on March 1 and will be hosted by Quinta Brunson from ‘Abbott Elementary’.
