In February, nine funeral attendees were sentenced to prison, six months after a feud between two family factions erupted into extreme violence at the Morriston Crematorium.
The fight was sparked by an ongoing feud between two family factions, the O’Brian and Coffey faction and the Murphy and Thomas faction, according to Swansea Crown Court.
At the same time, two other funerals were taking place, and grieving families were caught up in the violence.
The fighting factions appear to be using baseball bats and bricks in a video released by South Wales Police.
In one scene, James Coffey, who was sentenced to two years and three months in prison for his role in the brawl, wipes his head to check for a wound as blood pours down his neck.
In another video, a vehicle traveling at nearly 20 mph narrowly missed a wheelchair user and the person pushing them as they walked along graves.
Carl Price, a detective inspector, told Wales Online:
‘I believe people were shocked by this incident because of the scale of it, the level of violence, the location, and the disrespect shown to others.
‘With the types of weapons used and the way vehicles were driven around the cemetery, it’s a miracle no one was killed.’
Police searched hospitals in the south-west of Wales following the clash, knowing that participants had been seriously injured.
Several suspects were also caught on camera during their investigation attempting to dispose of weapons by throwing them into a stream near a farm.
Men wielding baseball bats spat on the floor of the crem’s remembrance room, while others drank from flower vases.
‘It was beyond the realms of coincidence that at least one machete, lump hammer, baseball bat, pickaxe handle, shovel, and probably golf clubs were available for use between the two sides of the conflict,’ said Paul Thomas KC.
‘According to the available footage, some of those present for the blessing were dressed appropriately for such a solemn occasion.
‘Many others were wearing vests and carrying weapons in their vehicles or on their person.’
‘The death of a family member is one of the most traumatic events in anyone’s life,’ he added. And the funeral of a loved one is a sacred time, full of solemnity, dignity, and deep sorrow.’
‘Your two warring factions desecrated this tragic family occasion.’
