On March 11, Ogun State Police Command agents rescued Oduneye Olusegun, a journalist who had been kidnapped by gunmen in the Mobalufon area of Ijebu Ode on March 9. The journalist, who was driving from Abeokuta, was abducted in his Toyota Camry car in the Mobalufon area around 7:50 p.m.

The abductors later called his wife the next morning through the victim’s phone and demanded N30 million in ransom. The incident was immediately reported to the authorities. Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police, CP Frank Mba, directed the DPO Obalende divisional headquarters, SP Murphy Salami, under whose jurisdiction the incident occurred, to ensure the victim’s safe rescue.
In accordance with the CP’s directive, the DPO mobilized his detectives and launched an investigation into the incident that was both technical and intelligence-based. Their efforts were rewarded when the victim’s Toyota Camry was tracked down to the Idimu neighborhood of Lagos, where the kidnappers were hibernating while waiting for the ransom.
When the hoodlums saw the cops, they engaged them in a shootout that lasted about 45 minutes before they abandoned the car and fled, suffering varying degrees of gunshot wounds. The Police team recovered the victim’s car, which was soaked with the kidnapper’s blood as a result of gunshot wounds. When the kidnappers realized the game was over, they had no choice but to abandon the victim.
Confirming the incident, the state police command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the Commissioner of Police, CP Frank Mba, who commended his men for their gallantry and professional conduct, urged members of the public, particularly hospitals and traditional healers, to notify the police if they see anyone with a gunshot wound in their area. He also stated that the Command has warned criminals to stay away from Ogun state because the Command is prepared to fight them right on their doorstep.
