According to reports, Sunday was attempting to mediate a marital dispute between the boxer and his wife, the deceased’s immediate younger sister.

According to the Nigerian Tribune, the incident occurred on March 19, 2023, at Erie Street, off Sokponba Road in Benin City, one week after the boxer allegedly assaulted a Pastor over a security levy disagreement.

Eguabor, the Head of the State Security Network in Erie and its environs and the Coach in Charge of Boxing in the Edo State Ministry of Sports Council, allegedly fled his home after committing the crime, barely one month after the victim’s wife gave birth.

Okoro, a father of three children, was said to have accepted an invitation to settle a dispute in their home from his younger sister, a renowned Judoka in the same Sports Ministry as her husband.

According to an eyewitness, Osahon Okoro-Obaraye, Eguabor inflicted severe injuries on Okoro’s eyes and nose.

According to him, Sunday sobbed bitterly over the attack before going to Esigie Police Division to file a formal complaint and was advised by a police officer on duty to go and treat the injury.

The eyewitness added that in the heat of his ordeal, Mr. Sunday, who is believed to be in his early 30’s, and bleeding severely trekked to his in-law’s house in First Erie Lane and demanded the whereabouts of Boxer, without the presence of the police who did not follow the injured victim to the scene of the crime.

He explained that Sunday, who could barely mutter, allegedly slumped and died, and that the alleged murderer fled immediately upon sensing danger.

Okoro-Obaraye recalled Eguabor terrorizing residents of Erie and its environs with firearms while dressed in the toga of the Edo State Vigilante Network, Aruosa Command near the Igbesamwan street junction.

Disgusted Okoro-Obaraye also revealed that he drove Sunday to various hospitals in Benin for urgent medical attention after he slumped, but Sunday was pronounced dead by the doctors.

He claimed that Eguabor also dealt with several people in the neighborhood, including a cleric who was luckily rescued by church members after being attacked by the suspect.

Okoro-Obaraye stated that the suspect’s wife had called her elder brother, who lives on Upper Sokponba Road, to come to her aid after she had a fight with her husband late Saturday, March 18th 2023.

“Scott’s wife informed her brother that her life was in jeopardy.” As a result, the elder brother, Mr Sunday, who works as a coffin maker on Erie Street but lives on Ski Street in Benin, intervenes,” he explained.

“After Sunday, who was in the church received a phone call from his elder brother, he left his church at about 2 p.m. He (Sunday) greeted me (the eyewitness) in Erie Street and thereafter proceeded to a place called “Mama Joy bar” where Scott was relaxing.

“After greeting his brother-in-law (Scott) and his sister, he asked the couple they were always quarreling? Why can’t they put an end to their constant squabble? Scott abruptly stood up and punched Sunday in the nose and mouth.

“As soon as Sunday fell, Scott began to yell and ordered that Sunday’s life be taken.” As a result, some of those present at the scene were lifted from the floor on Sunday. Sunday limped away from the scene and began to lament his ordeal.

“Before Sunday began making his statement, Esigie police immediately prepared an extract for him to go and treat himself at the police Clinic in Benin.”

“They (sympathizers) wanted to bring Sunday’s body to his killer’s paternal home, and I opposed it to prevent further bloodshed.” I then took his body to the same police station where we were advised to take it to one of the hospital mortuaries where we had taken him after the incident for preservation.

Mr. Sunday, a casket maker, had just finished repaying a debt of over N300,000 incurred after his wife (widow) gave birth to a baby boy via Caesarian Section (CS).

“Who is going to look after the young widow and his three children?” Okoro-Obaraye inquired, demanding justice.
