Prices of foodstuffs and perishable goods were greatly reduced during the presidential and governorship elections due to the naira redesign debacle, which caused a scarcity of new currency.

However, since the start of Ramadan, and with the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor’s directive to all commercial banks in the country to begin issuing old notes, food prices have risen above expectations.

Mrs Mary Andrew, who sells in Kaduna’s Central Market, said that due to the scarcity of new notes, she was unable to sell up to N10,000 per week.

She stated that now that money was in circulation, she needed to raise the price to compensate for the time she had lost.

Also, yam seller Alhaji Ibrahim Yusuf expressed confidence that the market for his yam is gradually returning to normal because, at the very least, this period is slightly better than a few weeks ago.

“No one came to buy yam when Naira was scarce.” I don’t have any money, and I’m not willing to sell my yam on credit. So, for the few people who came with cash, I tried to sell cheaply because I needed cash. “However, now that I have access to my money in the bank and can withdraw it, the exact price I want to sell my yam is what I quoted buyers,” he explained.

Mrs Paulina Atabo, who sells millet, corn, and other ingredients, said there has been a slight price increase because, since the election, no businessman or woman has traveled to buy from other states and resell because everyone is afraid of what will happen after the election.

According to her, what they are selling now are the items that were stored prior to the election, as they are still observing people’s reactions to the election.
