A powerful earthquake struck Turkey again this month, as the country struggles to recover from previous disasters, gistpeople reports

The 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck central Turkey just days after two additional quakes struck the border near Syria.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre issued an alert for a 10km-deep earthquake at 10.27 a.m.

A 10km-deep earthquake struck 40 kilometers south of Aksaray and 18 kilometers northeast of Emirgazi.

According to India Today, the disaster occurred in the Nide province, which is nearly 230 miles from Gaziantep and was affected by the initial 7.8 quake on February 6.

In the Golbasi district, collapsed buildings and heaps of rubble were also photographed, adding to the toll on Turkey’s infrastructure.

Today’s disaster occurs at a time when both Turkey and Syria have begun work to rebuild homes for the millions of people who have been displaced by the earthquakes.

More than 50,000 people have been killed as a result of the ongoing destruction, but no casualties have been confirmed as a result of today’s incident.

Vice President Fuat Oktay has since tweeted that teams are ‘in the field’ assessing the damage caused but ‘there is no negative situation at the moment’.

‘Get well soon to all our citizens who were affected by the earthquake in Nide’s Bor district,’ he said.

Our teams are on the ground, and the damage assessment work is ongoing. There is currently no negative situation. May Allah protect our country and our people from all disasters.’

On Monday, a new 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck parts of Turkey and Syria that had been devastated by a massive tremor two weeks earlier.

Officials confirmed three deaths in Monday’s earthquake after more buildings collapsed, trapping occupants, and several people were injured in both countries.

This occurred exactly two weeks after the devastating 7.8 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes on February 6.

Since the deadly earthquake, Turkey is said to have experienced 9,000 aftershocks.
