According to FIFA, every player at next month’s Women’s World Cup will earn at least $30,000, with the victors taking home a whopping $270,000.
Despite the popularity of women’s football, female players have expressed worry that they do not earn as much as males.
In a statement issued on Thursday, June 8, FIFA stated that the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand will begin on July 20 and that each of the 32 teams will get at least $30,000.
This amount rises in proportion to how far teams advance in the competition, which culminates on August 20.
According to FIFA, the average club pay for female football players is $14,000, which is a quarter of what their male colleagues receive.
FIFA claims that the investment in women’s football has tripled since the Women’s World Cup in France four years ago.
FIFA “listened to the voice of the players,” according to the global players’ organization FIFPro.
“We have taken steps towards greater gender equity in our game at its highest levels,” added FIFPro.
“The legacy of this action is created by the players, for the players, both today and tomorrow.”
