Six individuals were believed missing after gunmen assaulted six Hummer buses transporting officials of the Independent National Election Commission in Kogi State in the early hours of Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria says that the incident, which happened at about 2 am on March 19 in Obajana, left numerous officials with gunshot wounds, including policemen and drivers

The six missing people include two current members of the National Youth Service Corps and four ex-corps members.

The wounded victims are already on admission at the Federal Medical Centre, renamed Federal University Teaching Hospital, Lokoja.

Salisu Ibrahim, one of the bus drivers, who was wounded in his right leg, and recovering at the hospital, told NAN that the gunmen caught them by surprise.

“We were on our way back to Lokoja from Abujor RAC with the results of the House of Assembly election conducted there when we were ambushed by several persons.

“All the six buses going in a convoy were assaulted, and in the process, several of us got injuries.

“Thank God, none of us was killed in the process but I discovered several youth corps members are missing after the assault on us this early morning,” Ibrahim recalled.

NAN further learnt that the Commander, Headquarters Command Army Records, Maj-Gen. Sunday Igbinomwanhia; Kogi INEC Residential Electoral Commissioner, Hale Longpet; and the Kogi NYSC Coordinator, Mofoluwaso Williams; had visited the wounded in the hospital.

The spokesperson for the Kogi Police Command, SP Williams Ovye-Aya, confirmed the event, noting that the police were on top of the matter.

“We are aware of the unfortunate situation and plan to publish a comment on the attack,” he added.
