On Monday, February 6, 2023, a powerful earthquake of a magnitude of 7.8 struck central Turkey and northwest Syria, killing dozens of people.
Near the city of Gaziantep, the earthquake that struck at 04:17 local time (01:17 GMT) at a depth of 17.9 km (11 miles) also injured hundreds of people and destroyed multiple structures, including a mall.
According to Reuters, Cyprus and Lebanon were also affected by the earthquake.
As officials dispatched rescue teams and supply aircraft to the area surrounding the city of Kahramanmaras and declared a “level 4 alarm” that requests international assistance, Turkey’s disaster service reported that 76 people had been killed and 440 injured.
According to media accounts, at least 42 people were K#led in Syria.
There are worries that the death toll will dramatically increase in the ensuing hours.
At least 23 people were killed, according to local authorities, in the Malatya province to the northeast of Gaziantep. To the east, at Sanliurfa, there were 17 dfaths. Additionally, reports of dfaths in Diyarbakir and Osmaniye were made.
