The governor said that he was on top of the problem to guarantee that the suffering created by the naira redesign strategy of the Central Bank of Nigeria did not endure.

The statement said, “The Lagos State Government has noticed with grave concern the demonstrations in several areas of the state this morning. The demonstrators claimed to be outraged about the naira devaluation and its accompanying shortage that has created so much pain and uncertainty among our people.

“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu says there is no need for violence since the Supreme Court is looking into this sensitive topic and will make its opinion known on February 22.

“Lagos State has subsequently entered the legal fight – all in the interest of our people – in the idea that the highest court in the nation has the power to pronounce on the case. The gasoline situation is easing after various initiatives made by the administration.

“The administration hails Lagosians for exhibiting understanding, notwithstanding the sufferings that the Federal Government’s actions have caused. Residents should continue to remain law-abiding by rejecting any type of encouragement by mischief makers. Mr Governor is working with his colleagues to guarantee that this misery does not continue.”

It was reported earlier on Friday that demonstrations had broken out in several sections of the state over the difficulty created by the naira redesign policy and the inability of locals to get the new notes.

Areas like Lagos-Ikorodu Road, Agege, Iyana-Ipaja, and Igando, were all engaged in violence that shook the state.

It was also claimed that in the Epe region, some hoodlums had taken the chance of the naira crisis to create mayhem and demolish certain banks, despite the police having declared they were on top of the issue.
