Fuel scarcity, currency swap: Kwara sets up task force

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq convened an emergency security council meeting on Thursday to devise strategies to maintain law and order in the face of severe fuel scarcity and currency exchange challenges, gistpeople reports.

The governor also authorized the formation of a task force led by Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi to monitor the state’s fuel shortages and currency swap crises.

At the security council meeting were Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi, some cabinet members, security commanders, and Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, Emir of Ilorin and Chairman of the Kwara State Council of Chiefs.

With security commanders and cabinet members presenting field reports on the state’s fuel, currency, and security situation, the meeting urged calm while serious efforts are made to alleviate the fuel shortage and the challenges posed by the currency redesign.

According to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, in Ilorin on Thursday, the governor stated that the views expressed at the meeting will be presented at the Council of State meeting on Friday.

The security council advocated for the formation of a task force within the state government to interface with various oil marketers and make things easier for the people of the state.

The council was also briefed on the deployment of some Nigerian Air Force air assets to the state to strengthen security and public peace, according to the statement.

Commissioner for Business, Innovation, and Technology Ibrahim Akaje; Commissioner for Special Duties Hon. Olaitan Buraimoh; Special Adviser on Security; Special Adviser on Special Duties; and Senior Special Assistant on Security are also members of the task force.

Others include the Emir of Ilorin’s representative and the Chairman of the Council of Chiefs, as well as representatives from the Police, DSS, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, and independent oil marketers.

The committee’s mandate will be to monitor fuel supply and distribution in the state, to ensure that marketers follow best practices and act in the best interests of the public, and to prevent abuse of any kind in collaboration with fuel marketers.
