The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has indicated that it would go after certain exiting public officials after May 29.

The EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, said this in an interview with Daily Trust, published Friday.

Bawa who did not offer names or the number of public officials who will be charged under the statute said that at least two ministries were now under the radar of the commission for fraudulent actions that touched on procurement procedures.

“Currently, we’re examining two ministries where multiple payments were made. In one of the ministries, the multiple payments, collectively, were roughly 20 contracts of about N4bn.

“These were contracts that were done way back in 2018, and then some bunch of individuals, so brave, came out with the same story.

“They changed the papers from the file, falsified them, and then of course in a conspiracy of certain federal workers, boosted vouchers and pay. How can it happen if we have digitalised procurement processes?” Bawa queried.

He also replied to requests for his removal by various civil society organizations.

Bawa added, “It is on record that I am the first sitting EFCC chairman to go to court and testify, not once, not twice or three times. We now have a bunch of people who were paid, we know the ones that are paying them, coming up with all types of gang-ups.

“We are following due process and the rule of law. The court has issued a declaration, we have appealed that, and there is a stay of execution, what do you expect? Let’s move on!”

He stated that in the recent few months, the agency had more than ever before worked to institutionalise the operational operations of the EFCC, adding the EFCC would continue to perform the good things that certain individuals did not want.

“And God willing, come May and June, we are going to make some enormous arrests and initiate massive prosecutions of individuals.

“And for those folks that are not going in May, whenever they are leaving, we will be waiting for them to guarantee that justice is done,” he continued.
