The Department of State Services stated it has identified some unidentified important people plotting for an interim administration in the nation.
Branding the scheme as an anomaly, the DSS said the plan will undermine civil rule as well as throw the nation into an unnecessary catastrophe.
They were reported in a statement by the spokesman for the service, Peter Afunanya.
The message was captioned ‘DSS verifies scheme for temporary government by confused political actors’.
It partially stated, “The DSS has identified certain important actors in the scheme for an Interim Government in Nigeria. The Service perceives the conspiracy, being followed by these entrenched interests, as not just an anomaly but a devious means to put aside the constitution and weaken civil rule as well as plunge the nation into an unnecessary crisis.
“The illegality is utterly unacceptable in a democracy and to the peace-loving Nigerians. This is much more so as the machination is taking place following the peaceful holding of the elections in most parts of the country. ”
Afunanya stated these political players had held multiple meetings where he said they were plotting to finance violent demonstrations in various cities in the nation which would lead to a proclamation of a State of Emergency.
He continued, “The planners, in their numerous meetings, have examined different possibilities, which include, among others, to fund ceaseless violent mass rallies in key cities to support a proclamation of State of Emergency. Another is to acquire frivolous judicial injunctions to prevent the inauguration of new executive administrations and legislative chambers at the Federal and State levels.
“The DSS supports the President and Commander-in-Chief in his proclaimed commitment to a hitch-free handover and will assiduously work in this regard. It also helps the Presidential Transition Council and other comparable entities in the States. It will coordinate with them and sister security and law enforcement organizations to facilitate flawless inaugurations come 29th May 2023. ”
He encouraged individuals hatching such plots to halt, calling on the courts, Civil Society Organisations, and the media to be careful of their antics.
Afunanya noted that his agency will do legal measures available to safeguard the stability of democracy in the nation.
He stated, “Consequently, the Service firmly urges those planning to derail democracy in the nation to retreat from their deceitful designs and orchestrations.
“Stakeholders, including judicial authorities, media, and the Civil Society are admonished to be attentive and careful to avoid being exploited as tools to disrupt the peace and stability of the country. As its surveillance continues, the DSS will not hesitate to take decisive and appropriate legal actions against these misguided people to thwart their arrogant aims. “
