According to reports, Donald Trump has been informed that he is the subject of a criminal investigation concerning his handling of secret documents.
The Justice Department informed Trump’s lawyers of the latest development in a letter three days ago, according to Politico.
Although Trump stated on Truth Social that he had not been informed that he was being investigated, he did not say whether he had been advised that he was a target.
According to two sources, his attorneys have been alerted of his new position.
The formal notification is interpreted as an indication that Jack Smith, the special counsel hired to probe Trump’s handling of secret documents, is nearing a decision on whether to charge him.
According to the Justice Department handbook, prosecutors may send a ‘target letter’ to persons who are likely to be charged in connection with a grand jury investigation.
The move is intended to provide them the opportunity to testify before an indictment is issued. It does not ensure that charges will be filed.
Prosecutors define a target as someone who has “substantial evidence linking him or her to the commission of a crime and who, in the prosecutor’s opinion, is a putative defendant.”
Trump denied being notified he was being investigated, but claimed he had anticipated for years that he would be a target.
He wrote on Truth Social: ‘No one has told me I’m being indicted, and I shouldn’t be because I’ve done NOTHING wrong, but I have assumed for years that I am a Target of the WEAPONIZED DOJ & FBI, starting with the Russia, Russia, Russia HOAX, the ‘No Collusion’ Mueller Report, Impeachment HOAX, Impeachment HOAX, the PERFECT Ukraine phone call, and various other SCAMS & WITCH HUNTS.
