The disaster happened in Ojuelegba, Surulere Local Government Area on Sunday when a container-laden truck crashed on a commercial minibus, which is locally called “Korope”, killing nine people in the process.
Fortunately, a passenger, an adult female was saved alive and brought to a local hospital for treatment.
According to the witness, the collision, which occurred at noon at Ojuelegba, inward Fadeyi, caused a traffic jam along the axis as emergency personnel tried to contain the situation.
Members of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, police, the Lagos Fire and Emergency Service, and other rescue responders were on the site of the accident to recover and remove the debris from the road.
According to Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Dr Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, who verified the event, said normality has been restored in the axis.
Giving the situation report, Oke-Osanyitolu stated, “Upon arrival at the site, a truck transporting a 20ft container was discovered to have fallen on top of a commercial bus.
“Further investigations revealed that the bus was picking up passengers when the truck lost control and fell over the side of the bridge.
“After suspending the container load with the help of the Agency’s forklift and cutting off the top of the bus with light rescue equipment, a single adult lady was extricated alive and transferred to the trauma clinic.
The final mortality count is nine deaths comprising: four adult men, three adult females, a boy and a girl, while one adult female was saved alive.
The Agency’s heavy-duty Goliath and crews from Onipan and Cappa are on the ground. The Agency’s Ambulance, LASG FIRE, FED FIRE, LASTMA and Nigeria Police have been working on this crisis which is already completed.
Further inspection should be taken out by the Nigeria Police on the dismantling of the barricades on the bridge intended at stopping vehicles.
