Her condition rapidly deteriorated after she arrived, and she was placed on a ventilator in the ICU before being declared brain dead, according to investigators.
Doctors made the decision to remove the victim from life support early Sunday morning.
They did, however, suspect her rapid deterioration and reported it to the police.
The Major Crimes Homicide Unit of the Aurora Police Department launched an investigation and discovered that the victim had been poisoned — allegedly by the man who had rushed her to the hospital.
“When the suspicious details of this case were revealed, our team of officers and homicide detectives worked tirelessly to uncover the truth behind the victim’s sudden illness and death,” said Division Chief Mark Hildebrand in a statement. “It was quickly determined that this was a heinous, complex, and calculated murder.”
They obtained a warrant and arrested Craig, 45, early Sunday after the woman was taken off life support.
He was booked into the county jail that afternoon on a first-degree murder charge, according to police.
The killer’s motive has not been revealed.
The investigation is still going on.
