Death of student, Whitney Adediran: Chrisland School, staff, and vendor to face charges

According to the Lagos State Government, a case of involuntary manslaughter, as well as reckless and negligent behaviour, has been established against Chrisland School, some staff members, and a vendor in the death of one of its former students, Whitney Adeniran.

On February 9, Adeniran was said to have slumped during her school’s inter-house sport. An autopsy revealed that the 12-year-old died as a result of Asphyxia and electrocution.

 

Following the student’s death in a controversial circumstance, the state government, through the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo, ordered a coroner’s inquest to determine the cause of death. Magistrate Olabisi Fajana, the Coroner, later revealed that the coroner’s inquest into the 12-year-death old’s would begin on April 4.

PRESS STATEMENT IN HONOUR OF THE LATE WHITNEY ADENIRAN (CHRISLAND STUDENT).

 

Whitney Omodesola Adeniran, a student of Chrisland High School, Ikeja, slumped during the Inter-house Sports organised by the school at the Agege Sports Stadium on the 9th of February 2023 and was subsequently rushed to Agege Central Hospital, Agege, Lagos, where she was confirmed “brought in dead” (BID) by the doctor on duty.

 

 

 

The case was referred to the Nigerian Police Force, which conducted an extensive investigation with the assistance of other agencies.

 

On Monday, March 20th, 2023, the file was forwarded to the DPP’s Office for review of the duplicate case file. The DPP issued his Legal Advice on March 23rd, 2023, and concluded that a prima facie case of Involuntary Manslaughter and Reckless and Negligent Acts had been established against the School, some members of Staff, and one of the Vendors.

 

As a result, they will be charged with Involuntary Manslaughter and Reckless and Negligent Acts in violation of Sections 224 and 251 of the Criminal Law, Ch C17, Vol.3, Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

 

The information will be filed in accordance with the DPP’s legal advice. The Ministry of Justice website has Certified True Copies of the Legal Advice (www.lagosstatemoj.org.).
