Temmie Ovwasa, formerly known as YBNL Princess, a Nigerian musician, has said that coming out as a lesbian has hurt her career.
This was revealed by the self-proclaimed queer on the newest episode of Doyin’s Corner, a podcast hosted by former Big Brother Naija housemate Doyinsola David.
She claimed that disclosing her sexuality meant career suicide, and that many people banned her as a result.
“I was working with someone, and he told me that there are rumours about my sexuality, so I should get a boyfriend,” she explained. I’m not going to play this game again [laughs].
“The person wanted me to get a boyfriend to hide my career.” It’s professional suicide, I mean; what I did was career suicide. It’s something I’m well aware of. Coming out to say I’m gay kills my career. Nobody in the mainstream wants to be associated with [a gay]. And this is something I’m very aware of the consequences of my action. I took it deliberately.”
Temmie Ovwasa came into the limelight in 2015 following her introduction as the first female signee of the YBNL record.
She parted ways with the label in 2020 after falling out with the label boss, rapper Olamide.
The same year, she dropped the first openly gay album in Nigeria titled ‘E be like say dem swear for me’.
