King Charles III will continue to reign as monarch and head of state over fourteen sovereign entities known as the Commonwealth realms.

Although he may lose the sovereign state of New Zealand after Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said on May 1 that he supports the country becoming a republic.

However, the Prime Minister went on to say that he was not pressing for this to happen as soon as feasible.

However, only hours before leaving for London to attend King Charles III’s coronation, the Prime Minister assured reporters, “Ideally, in time, New Zealand will become a fully independent country, will stand on our own two feet in the world, as we, by and large, do now.”

New Zealand is an independent former British colony.

However, as head of state and monarch, Charles retains a purely ceremonial function and is represented in New Zealand by a governor-general.

Barbados became the world’s newest republic in 2020 after removing Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state.

Mauritius became a republic in 1992 as well.

As head of state, King Charles, who is represented by a Governor-General in the countries in issue, opens and dismisses parliament through the Governor-General, commissions the Prime Minister, and appoints additional ministries after elections.

As Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, he also provides approval to laws passed by Parliament and fulfills ceremonial tasks such as attending parades.
