The Lagos State Government has warned people to prepare for above-normal rainfall, which will start in the first week of April and stop in December.
This was made known by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tunji Bello, who spoke during the 2023 press conference on Seasonal Climate Forecasts and its ssocio-economicramifications for Lagos, held at Alausa, Ikeja.
According to the commissioner, the 1936.2mm quantity of rainfall anticipated for 2023 was larger than the long-term average of 1721.48mm seen in the state in the prior 10 years.
He claimed that particularly, Ikeja is projected to receive a yearly amount of 1,900mm while Badagry would get 1,978mm amount of rainfall.
Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe are predicted to get rainfall with yearly quantities of 1,903mm, 1,936mm and 1,952mm correspondingly, with commencement dates of April 1 and cessation of December 3, 2023, he added.
“It is also projected that the current rise in the frequency of severe weather occurrences will continue in 2023, with days of extremely-high rainfall quantities that may result in floods, partly because strong winds are forecast between the commencement and cessation of each storm,” Bello stated.
The commissioner stated that the state had maintained to maintain the synergy and relationship with the Ogun-Oshun River Basin Development Authority to successfully prevent floods.
