Bauchi communal clash: Septuagenarian killed, many injured, 64 houses set ablaze

Apollos Danlami, 70, was killed in a communal clash on Saturday in Sanga village, Bogoro Local Government Area, Bauchi State, while Naemiya Nature, 65, and another person were injured to varied degrees in the clashes.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Bauchi State Police Command, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the fights erupted as a result of the coronation of Hamlet as the head of Sanga, which sparked protests from some enraged youngsters in the community.

Wakil explained to journalists on Sunday in Bauchi that after receiving a distress call about the skirmishes, the command quickly deployed its operatives in the area, including tactical teams, Rapid Response Squad (RRS), and Operation Restore Peace, and that the deployment brought the situation under control.

“One person by the name of Apollos Danlami 70 years old was killed in the incident, while a certain Naemiya Bature 65 years old and some other people were injured,” said a police official.

“The enraged youths set fire to 64 houses, three motorcycles, and properties worth millions of Naira.”

According to the PPRO, “the area is relatively peaceful for the time being, and security measures have been reinforced in and around Bogoro LGA as the safety of the citizens remains the Command’s highest priority, while a work round-the-clock to keep harm at bay.”

“Visibility patrol is also ongoing to maintain public peace and order.”

He stated that the state Commissioner of Police has directed Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Bogoro to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to this upheaval, and that concerted efforts had been intensified in order to apprehend the perpetrators of the heinous act and subject them to the full wrath of the law.
