The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Solomon Arase, who officially started office on Thursday, has said he will guarantee cordiality in the supervisory relationship between the commission and the Nigeria Police Force.

He also sought the help of the media to encourage unity between the PSC and the NPF.

Arase, a former Inspector-General of Police, who committed to healing the divide existing between the PSC and the NPF in recent times, remarked that the topic of security sector reform was highest on the list of his agenda at the commission.

Recall that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had on January 24, 2023, nominated Arase as the new chairman of the panel after the resignation of its prior chairman, Musiliu Smith, who is also a former IGP.

The new PSC leader took the oath of office on Wednesday in the council rooms before the start of the Federal Executive Council meeting, two months after the Senate approved him as chairman of the commission

Addressing journalists during a media parley in his office on Thursday evening immediately after resuming office, the former IGP encouraged increased collaboration between the media and the police force with a tongue the public’s unfaunfavourableceptions about the police in the nation.

He stated that the media will be given easy access to vital information to be able to promote the police force in a favour ble light, adding that the police force is intended to be a “Nigerian Police Force,” where people can criticise and also present ways to correct the issues.

Arase added, “I did suggest yesterday (Wednesday) that there is going to be some paradigm change in our connection and supervision duty with the Nigeria Police Force. Most of the things we have experienced in recent times are dissatisfaction about the connection when it comes to who must do one thing or the other.

“One big area that we have not spoken about is the topic of security sector reform and that is where I am going to seek your assistance to see how we can charge up our relationship.

“We have been dealing with problems of public bad impression and I want you to adjust your attitude towards coverage of the police activity in the country.”
