South Africa continues to deal with economic and social rights in the new year as high levels of inequality and unemployment prevail, according to Human Rights Watch’s 2023 World Report.
On a worldwide scale, a paper describes the “litany of human rights disasters in 2022”,
“The obvious conclusion to take from the litany of human rights catastrophes in 2022 is that unfettered authoritarian authority leaves behind a sea of human suffering,” the acting executive director at Human Rights Watch, Tirana Hassan, stated in response to the study.
“Governments that fail to live up to their legal commitments to defend human rights at home create the seeds of dissatisfaction, instability, and eventually crises. Left unchecked, the outrageous behaviours of abusive regimes intensify, solidifying the view that corruption, censorship, impunity, and violence are the most effective methods to accomplish their aims.”
