Wimbledon tournament prize money increases to record $56.6 million

The All England Club has revealed that a record $56.6 million (£44.7 million) in prize money would be available during this year’s Wimbledon tournament.

The prize money is up 11.2% from last year, with the men’s and women’s singles champions both receiving close to $3 million (£2.35 million) and the runners-up receiving about $1.5 million (£1.175 million).

Wimbledon had lowered prize money during the pandemic, but the current compensation for reaching the singles finals is the same as it was in 2019.

“We are delighted to offer record prize money to the players competing at The Championships this year, with double digit increases across the majority of events,” said All England Club chairman Ian Hewitt.

“Our goal with this distribution is to restore the prize money for singles champions and runners-up to levels prior to the pandemic in 2019, while also providing deserved support for players in the early rounds of the event.”

Wimbledon’s qualification prize money has increased 14.5% over last year, while singles players who lose their first-round match in the main draw will receive $70,000 (£55,000), a 10% increase over last year.

The competition in 2023 begins on July 3 and runs until July 16.

Novak Djokovic, who won a men’s record 23rd grand slam victory at the French Open earlier this month, will defend his singles titles, while Elena Rybakina, who won her first grand slam trophy last year, will defend her women’s crown.
