According to Russian media sources, a shark mauled a Russian guy swimming at an Egyptian beach crowded with people on Thursday, June 8, including the man’s father.
The graphic footage, which is circulating on the internet, purports to show a large splash and commotion in the water as the man is dragged beneath the sea by the shark, as scared spectators scream for aid.
“It’s eating his remains now,” one witness who captured the incident on video can be heard saying.
According to Egypt’s environment ministry, a tiger shark killed the man at the Elysees Dream Beach Hotel in the popular Egyptian resort of Hurghada.
According to the Daily Beast, Russia’s consul general in Hurghada, Viktor Voropayev, said the victim is 23-year-old Russian “V. Popov,” and that he was not a tourist, but had been living in Egypt for several months.
Popov’s girlfriend is said to have escaped the water uninjured.
Bystanders reported they attempted to assist Popov but were unsuccessful.
“It happened in an instant. Rescuers arrived promptly. For some reason, I had the impression it was a shark. I quickly stood up and began yelling, ‘Sharks, sharks! ‘Help yourself!’ “No one understood yet,” a witness told Russian television station REN-TV.
According to authorities, the shark was apprehended and taken to a laboratory “for examination and all required information to determine the possible causes of the attack.”
“It’s a terrible thing, this guy’s remains are over there.” I’m trembling. The shark devoured the man right in front of my eyes. I believe I require a beverage. “I feel terrible,” a woman said on the Telegram channel Baza.
According to National Geographic, tiger sharks are second only to great white sharks in terms of human attacks.
“However, because they have a nearly completely undiscerning palate, they are unlikely to swim away after biting a human, as great whites frequently do,” according to the publication.
