According to Florida court documents, a dual Haitian-Chilean citizen who pled guilty to federal crimes connected to his involvement in the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise was sentenced to life in prison.

According to authorities, Mose, 53, was shot dead inside his home in the Pelerin 5 community in the hills above Port-au-Prince at 01:00 local time on July 7, 2021.

The president was shot 12 times, with many bullet wounds to his head and torso. According to one of the judges overseeing the probe, his left eye had been gouged out and bones in his arm and ankle had been broken.

He died at the scene and was discovered laying on his back on the floor, his clothing soaking in blood. Martine Mose, the first lady, was also shot but survived.

Rodolphe Jaar was sentenced by Judge Jose E. Martinez on Friday following a 10-minute hearing in Miami. The life sentences are to be served concurrently on all three offences.

According to the plea bargain, Jaar pled guilty in March to three counts, including conspiracy to commit murder or kidnapping outside the United States and giving material support resulting in death.

According to the court docket, Martinez recommended that Jaar be assigned to a federal prison in or near South Florida based on his background and offences.

In exchange for his guilty plea, Jaar agreed to be sentenced by a judge, provide accurate testimony, produce documents and records, and appear before a grand jury and other legal proceedings when federal prosecutors summoned him.

Jaar was one of numerous suspects who remained at large in the months following Moise’s murder. In January 2022, he was apprehended in the Dominican Republic and extradited to the United States.

According to the plea deal, Jaar gave monies used to obtain firearms, food and accommodation to other co-conspirators, and funding to bribe Haitian officers in charge of Moise’s protection.
