According to a new report, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are “shocked” by the response to their car chase claims.
Harry and Meghan claimed they were involved in a “near-catastrophic” two-hour paparazzi chase in New York City earlier this month while returning from the Women of Vision Awards at the Ziegfeld Ballroom, where Meghan was honoured for her advocacy by Gloria Steinem, along with Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland.
“It began with 12 paparazzi and ended with four chasing [Meghan, Harry, and Doria].” Their security did everything they could to keep [photographers] away.” according to their spokesperson
The event was compared to the paparazzi automobile chase that resulted in Princess Diana’s death in a Paris tunnel disaster.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have faced a barrage of criticism in the aftermath of their vehicle chase allegations, with many accusing them of seeking sympathy and being liars. However, they stated that the criticisms will not prevent them from discussing it.
“They insist their account of the car chase was absolutely not exaggerated, and for people to say otherwise is so hurtful and out of line,” a source told Us Weekly magazine.
“As far as staying out of sight and being scared to show their faces, that’s not going to happen,” a source told the site. “[This] has only strengthened their resolve to continue standing up for themselves and speaking out when they believe they have been wronged.”
The couple’s agent also denied rumours that the crash was fabricated for publicity purposes.
“Respectfully, considering the duke’s family history, one would have to think nothing of the couple or anybody associated with them to believe this was any sort of PR stunt,” publicist Ashley Hansen said, referring to Princess Diana’s deadly vehicle crash with paparazzi in 1997. “Quite frankly, I think that’s abhorrent.”
Harry, who was 12 years old when his mother died, has previously stated that he mourns his mother “every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash.”
