Seven wedding guests allegedly died and others were hospitalised after drinking a local tea made from Zakami, a local herb containing a hallucinogenic chemical.
Sanusi Yahaya, the bride’s elder brother who corroborated the occurrence, told Daily Trust that it is thought the tea was tainted with drugs because it has become a standard for young people in the neighbourhood, particularly drug addicts, to use weddings as an avenue to cook and take narcotics.
Yahaya stated:
“They cooked the tea and didn’t even know how many and what kind of drugs were in it, so some had to abandon it.” However, several of them insisted on drinking from the tea, claiming that their minds could handle it.
“Two people died after drinking the tea; some have recovered, while others are in the hospital.”

Another eyewitness, Abdullahi Muhammad, stated that seven individuals died after drinking the tea. Those hospitalised were also not from the area, but were passing through and decided to drink from the tea.
Muhammad stated;
“We don’t know the exact number for the time being, but seven people were confirmed dead this morning.” Some of them were not even invited to the wedding; they just arrived to disguise themselves and take their narcotics.”
The groom could not be reached for comment since he is on the run, according to the publication.
