The electoral officer in charge of Maradun Local Government Area in Zamfara State, Bashir Shagari, has been abducted by unknown gunmen.

Shagari, according to a source, was coming to INEC collation center in Gusau to give the results of the gubernatorial election for Maradun Local Government when he was abducted along the way on Monday.

The source further said that the electoral official was along with other INEC employees when they were stopped on a bridge near Maradun town and spirited away to an unknown location.

Confirming the event to The PUNCH, the Public Relations Officer of INEC in the state, Muktari Janyau, said the situation had been reported to the police headquarters.

Janyau added, “The resident electoral commissioner in charge of Zamfara State, Professor Sa’idu Babura Ahmed, has reported the incident to the police commissioner for proper action.”

The spokesman of the state police command, SP Mohammed Shehu, could not be contacted for comment as of the time of reporting this story.

Meanwhile, results from nine out of 14 local government areas have been revealed and the opposition PDP is ahead in seven local governments thus far declared.
