Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on Tuesday pardoned 12 criminals on death row and also remitted the death sentences of 6 detainees to life imprisonment.
The spokesperson, Kano State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, SC Musbahu Lawan K/ Nassarawa who confirmed this in a statement made available to newsmen in the state, said the Governor equally pardoned Four female inmates with long-term sentences, based on their good behaviour and industries as recommended by the Correctional Authority.
SC K/ Nassarawa stated some of the pardoned convicts had spent 25 years awaiting death.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the prerogative of Mercy, Abdullahi Garba Rano praised Governor Ganduje for utilizing the authority granted to him by the Constitution to equally pardoned Four female inmates with long-term sentences, based on their good behaviour and industrious as recommended by the Correctional Authority.
For his part, the Controller of Prisons, Kano State Command, Sulaiman Mohd Inuwa commended the Governor for decongesting the custodial Institution.
He however urged the liberated convicts to be excellent ambassadors of the Nigerian Correctional Service to society and to keep away from any act or acts that might bring them back to the correctional institution.
Meanwhile, the liberated convicts were handed 5000 naira notes by the Governor to allow them to take themselves back home and reconnect with their families.
