According to the New York Times (NYT) late on Sunday, the job cuts made over the weekend represent approximately 10% of Twitter Inc’s workforce and are the latest round of layoffs since Mr. Musk took over the social media site in October.

‘Have a great Sunday,’ Musk tweeted on Sunday. ‘Today marks the beginning of the rest of your life.’

The most recent layoffs targeted product managers, data scientists, and engineers, including Esther Crawford, a product manager and Musk supporter who oversaw the launch of Twitter Blue, a paid subscription service.

Since half of the company was laid off in November of last year, the layoffs affected the most people at the company.

When employees were unable to access their emails or work computers, they realized they were about to lose their jobs.

Musk informed employees in late November that no further layoffs were planned. Employees suspected that another round of layoffs was on the way after losing access to their Slack channel last week.

On Saturday night, some people discovered that they had been logged out of their emails and laptops.

The most recent layoffs primarily impacted Crawford and other product managers, as well as data scientists and engineers working on machine learning and site reliability.

The administration used an anonymous platform for verified employees to detail the layoffs as they occurred over the weekend.

‘At 2 a.m. on Saturday, people receive email, and access is immediately terminated. According to a Blind post, this will go down as one of the most extreme layoffs in corporate history.

Layoffs were most severe in the project management department, according to the poster, but they also affected human relations, sales and marketing, engineering, and finance.

Crawford was among those laid off after founding a small screen-sharing and video chat app called Squad before joining Twitter, which Twitter acquired in 2020.
